![]() ![]() I agree with you that quartz/solar/radio is probably more for me, I'll probably just have to forget about automatics and settle with others. ![]() Quartz are nice and I like that they are accurate but they don't have a sweeping second hand which I also really like. I love the see through case backs on some of the mechanical watches so I can see the internals, but they are a nuisance to have. I'm prepared to put up with it in the one watch I wear all the time, because its quite accurate, and never off my wrist long enough to wind down, but all my other watches are quartz/solar/radio controlled, and I probably wouldn't buy another mechanical watch, excepting perhaps a manual wind dress watch.Yeah this is how I feel. I love the idea of an automatic movement, but find the reality of wearing them a nuisance really. If you're the sort of person who needs/wants pretty accurate time, and doesn't want to have to regularly set his watch, you should really go with quartz. I'm not sure mechanical watches are for you mate. Spending mega bucks will get you the accuracy you desire in a mechanical watch - but do you really want to spend a very large sum to get the same level of accuracy you could obtain from a £5 quartz.Įdit - 'm with you on this, whether vintage or not, all my mechanical watches past and present have been bought not for their accuracy, but the pleasure of owning a particular watch design that I liked the look of and feel on the wrist and too me at least the pleasure of setting once a week or month was the joy of handling it. so I'm probably the least qualified forum member to be commentating on this thread If I'm in a rush and need a grab and go watch I simply put on one of my few quartz watches. I use them as a guide to the time because being accurate to the second or exact minute doesn't make the slightest difference to my life. Half the time I don't even bother setting them to the exact minute when I put them on, if its 7.21am or 7.22am it really doesn't matter that much to me. I'm happy if they're accurate to within a minute a day - they rarely get worn for longer than one day at a time, so accuracy isn't that important to me. ![]() I like my vintage mechanicals, there are many fantastic styles and ranges to choose from at real bargain prices compared to buying new. 1% accuracy is really going to cost, and will also leave you with a very small range of very expensive watches to choose from. Even though I'm no way near being able to purchase one yet, how about a Seiko spring drive or a seiko automatic hi-beat? Can these satisfy my needs when I can eventually get one or is it still a bit too much to ask for?Spending mega bucks will get you the accuracy you desire in a mechanical watch - but do you really want to spend a very large sum to get the same level of accuracy you could obtain from a £5 quartz.ĩ9.9% accuracy in a mechanical watch can be obtained cheaply, minimising the remaining. I realised I was being unreasonable after I had written that. You do make a good point about the non-hacking mechanism, I didn't know that it actually didn't have one. M.That's true, although I don't need radio controlled watch, a normal quartz will more than suffice. I still wouldn't consider that a MASSIVE hassle though Inevitably, with more than one watch, that means I rarely wear mine. Much more annoying, for me, is the non-hacking mechanism in a 5 means you need to wear it all the time or it stops (you can't hand wind it like most autos) and needs resetting every time you wear it. Really? a MASSIVE hassle? Spending 1-2 minutes a month resetting your watch? Blimey, life must be hard with things like traffic jams, trains running late, having to wait at a bar to get served, people in front of you at the supermarket checkout.įWIW (not a lot as it's a sample of one), the 5 I have is very accurate (moreso than a number of much more expensive watches I own, but which could probably do with a service), but if EVER setting a watch REALLY is a MASSIVE hassle for you, you shouldn't be considering anything but radio controlled quartz watches really. ![]()
